Baby’s In the Bath

by Larry John

The other day a friend of mine and I were having a discussion on the subject of religion when my friend said, be careful Larry, don’t “Throw the baby out with the bath water.” I find it interesting to find out where “sayings” come from…you know… the “sayings” we say… not realizing there was once a reason why people said them. For example, in the 1500’s “baths” consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children - last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water." I guess we should always be careful what we throw out…physically and mentally. Think about it.
