Behind the Wrinkles

by Larry John

They say we change or personalities every seven years. We don’t notice these changes, but little by little - year to year, we change. The change is so slow we don’t even notice it. When I walk past the mirror I sometimes don’t recognize the person staring back at me. In my mind . . . I’m young.  When I look at pictures of me 30 years ago it is hard to recognize the person in the pictures. In a way it is almost painful. As we grow older we still relate to ourselves as 25 year olds …not 50 year olds. And when I see friends I have not seen in 30 years it is startling at first to see them with all the gray hair and wrinkles. I know they are just as shocked to see me. What I find interesting is that after about 30 seconds, I don’t see the gray hair…I just see the real person behind all the wrinkles. Why is that? Think about it.
