Just Listen and Play

by Larry John

I learned to play my first set of drums when I was 8 years old. My parents found a drum teacher and within a few months I was playing drums. I learned that being able to play the drums correctly requires a person to be able to multi task several things at the same time. You have to keep your right foot going on the bass drum when your left foot is doing a different beat on the sock cymbal, while at the same time doing an entirely different beat with the right hand on the ride cymbal and then a completely different beat with your left hand on the snare drum and all the time doing “fill-ins” every 4-8 measures. And the final step, after you have learned all the beats, is the hardest of all…you just listen to the music and play…and DON’T think about it. Just play! This just may relate to living life to the fullest.  Think about it.
