Lose the Mask

by Larry John

I once knew a friend who ran away from his job, his family and friends looking to find himself… only to find, as the Hindu saying goes, “Wherever I go, there I am.” Most of us in life wear figurative masks to hide the real person that we are. We try to look rich and important or visa versa by the clothes we wear, the homes we live in and the “logos” we drive. And just like a mask at Halloween, we think the masks make us a different person. Some masks become so much a part of us that we can sometimes forget who we are. We are constantly trying to be someone we are not…so we put on these masks hoping to fool ourselves and others. Who is the man behind the mask really? We must all make it a point to look at ourselves without our worldly masks of titles, logos, and clothes. Wherever you go, there you are. I want to know the “man looking back at me in the mirror;” not the masks and costumes he wears.   Think about it.
