Offending Americans

We are all aware that we have to watch what we say in today’s politically correct environment. It seems that no matter what we say, it can be interpreted by someone as offensive. I think it is funny that we are no longer Americans. We are African Americans, Native Americans, Irish Americans, Italian Americans, and so on. I thought the United States was called the melting pot. Well it seems as though the pot ain’t melting that much any more.  Not too long ago, Justice William J. Brennan, a U. S. Supreme Court Justice, said the following. If there is a bedrock principle of the First Amendment, it is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable.”  It’s a good thing he died in 1997 because I am sure someone, somewhere would find his idea of allowing self expression…pretty darn offensive. Think about it.
