School and Education

by Larry John

I have always thought there is a big difference between “school and education.” Some of the most brilliant and educated people I know never graduated from High School. A school is a physical place where you go to learn, but going to school doesn’t necessarily mean you are being educated. Education happens in two ways…. First, there are things we are forced to learn and second, there are things we want to learn. If we are forced to learn facts and figures in order to pass a test, these things are quickly forgotten. If we really want to learn, we remember and apply the knowledge. Perhaps we should go to school when we are very young and curious and then again when we are old; because it is then that we know what we want to know, and we really want to be educated.  School and Education…definitely not the same thing! Think about it.
