Sticks and Stones

by Larry John

Have we, as a nation, become TOO politically correct? To me, words are no more than that….words. Just words! “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” I said it as a child, but is it still true today? I think words are just words…and WE give them meaning. Call me what you want. I don’t have to agree with you. You cannot legislate taste and manners. Those things were determined in the past by the Golden Rule and hopefully, good breeding. But today, we spend so much time thinking about ourselves in a relentlessly narcissistic way that other's feelings are the last thing any of us consider. Rather than try to create an artificial atmosphere of cordiality, how about if we spend some time reviewing what I consider to be the primary lesson of mankind: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Or maybe better said, “Do unto others as THEY want done unto THEM.” Think about it.
