Ugly Greatness

by Larry John

I try to imagine the world of England back when those upstart colonies started speaking out and causing trouble. What were the English peoples’ thoughts about themselves and their country’s greatness at the time? They were the world power, a great society wanting to share its greatness with the rest of the world by colonizing it and reaping its benefits. Then I read an article by Arundhati Roy entitled, "Do Turkeys Enjoy Thanksgiving." I didn’t really realize how the rest of the world views the United States. For the first time I was looking at the United States through the eyes of people from other countries and it wasn’t a pretty sight. Perhaps in our zeal to make the whole world be like us, we have become ugly to those who look at us from afar. Perhaps they perceive us as the colonists perceived the England of old. Think about it.
